Review of Creative Economy

We were listening PhD Jari Kaivo-oja 6.10.2010 in University of Turku. Jari Kaivo-oja is Research Director of Finland Futures Research Centre, He was talking about Creative Economy and Dynamics of Creative Industries to us, Creative Business Management students.

Lecture was quite inspiring, because he told us good tips about creativity and creative economy content. Kaivo-oja mentioned today’s hot things: personal branding, service design, innovation journalism, innovation concept and hybrid economy. Creative Industries and Creative Economy consist of Copyright industries, Patent Industries, Trademark Industries and Design Industries. Creative industries are based on learning and doing. Key Competences now days are Network Competence, Service Competence, Creativity and Innovation, Responsible Business, Management of Multiculturalism and Design Competence.

Here are some themes that Kaivo-oja told us in the lecture.

Creativity
Creativity is hard to explain. It’s still partly a mystery. Kaivo-oja described that creativity is the ability to make something new and fresh. Creativity is management, development, branding and shape of every product. Economy is production, exchange and consumption of goods and service. Creativity is helping an idea developing into innovation. Business is going to be more dependent on Creativity. Without new fresh ideas, companies cannot be competitive in the future. Ideas are your capital. Organizations need desperately creative people to work with them.

Personal Branding
Creative people and organizations are becoming more businesslike. They both are using personal branding to get positive reputation. In personal branding Kaivo-oja advises everyone to focus on their own strengths. A professor of management and organization, Alf Rehn is also talking about that. He says that in Finland we concentrate to improve our weaknesses. We try to get balance with our strengths and weaknesses. While we can focus on our strengths, get even better and specialize in one field. The brave specialization is the best approach. But specialization is not an only thing you need on your way to success. Success requests ambition, patience, personal branding, lifelong learning and innovation.

Slow Life
There is also a trend of consumer behavior “Life and Fun”. Entertainment, hobbies, leisure, leisure activities, wellness, travel, living, energy consumption and slow life are very important to people. People enjoy slower and more meaningful life than before. These kinds of trends are good to take into account in business. The point of Slow life is that you have more strength to work and then be more creative. But the problem is how to get people to stop? We are living in the world were efficiency is priority one. If you do something slow, you are lazy.

Do-It-Yourself
The big change in business is that consumers aren’t consumers like we know any more. Now day’s consumers are involved in the design and development of products, so they can affect products and services. That’s why we are using term, prosumer, which is combination of producer and consumer. People want to take part and communicate with the brand. One-way interaction is not enough anymore.

Service Design
Kaivo-oja told us web site called servicedesign.tv which is a platform for high quality articles from high quality articles from leading thinkers in service design. There are visions and ideas about the future of service design, education and innovations.

You can read also more about Service Design in Futurist & concept designer Jari Koskinen’s publication, Service Design, Perspectives on turning-points in design.

Last tips
Kaivo-oja tells also about The Stanford Institute of Design, d.school. D.school is a place where design thinking is the glue that binds people together. You can find d.school in web and you can follow d.school in Twitter

Jari Kaivo-oja also recommended the book called Management and The Arts, which I bought in Amazon immediately.

Jari Kaivo-oja is also a blogger and you can read more his thoughts in Finnish here
